About VIX

The VIX, calculated by Cboe, measures the volatility the market expects for the S&P 500 over the next 30 days, based on index option prices. It is not a stock index: it does not rise when stocks rise.

Higher readings mean investors expect bigger swings, which tends to happen in times of stress. That is why it is nicknamed the "fear gauge."
