About S&P 500
The S&P 500 tracks about 500 large companies listed on U.S. exchanges, weighted by market value. Calculated by S&P Dow Jones Indices, it is widely seen as the best single gauge of the U.S. stock market.
Because the largest companies carry the most weight, moves in big tech stocks tend to have an outsized effect on the index.
