The Nikkei 225 is Japan's leading stock index, calculated by the Nikkei newspaper from 225 companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Like the Dow Jones, it is price-weighted. Because Tokyo trades hours before the Americas, it is often one of the first signals of the day for global markets.
